MAC Pro Palettes

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I thought I’d do an updated post on MAC Pro Palettes. I think the MAC website is slightly confusing and I think some of the information out there on them is just flat out wrong.

There are 4 types of pro palettes that MAC offers: Shadow x2, Shadow x4, Large Single and Large Duo. The x2 and x4 palettes come with inserts already in them. The large palettes are “empty” (only a magnetized bottom) and you can buy inserts (if you want them) for eye shadow, blush & cream products.

The x4 palette is $8 and the x2 palette is $5. I use my x4 for travel or sometimes to throw a few shadows in my bag. I use the x2 for eyebrow colors. It’s nice, easy and just plain handy to have those colors at your fingertips. I believe both (including the duo) are deeper their their originals, but that doesn’t bother me at all. Both are compact, sleek and easy to store/tote around. I carry eyebrow products in my duo for an easy grab.

The Pro Palette Large Single (right) is only $8, but comes without inserts. The Pro Palette Duo comes without inserts or a clear top, but has 2 sides to store double the makeup. The inserts also saw a decrease in price down to only $2. You can get a x15 eye shadow insert or a x6 blush insert. Notice that the large duo is almost double in size compared to the single. Both come with magnetized bottoms, so inserts are optional. I personally just like how they look, but others don’t mind and you can squeeze in extra shadows (but for $2, why not??).

Though the new Large Single is really well received a lot of people complained about about the thickness. It’s almost double the thickness of the original. You can see an original on top of a new Pro Palette. This doesn’t bother me at all and I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but I know a lot of pros are complaining about space. In my mind, if space really is an issue, I’ve taken out the insert and stored shadows, blushes and brushes in the palette for travel which isn’t a problem.

I also love that the extra height lets me de-pot my mineral products and store them easily. I have gone ahead and kept my mineralize skinfinishes in their pots, but I decided to de-pot the blushes (shown above) and I love the look as well as how easy it is to have them in 1 place now.

Although I love the look of the clear top, I got a couple of duos. I think these are versatile because you can carry twice as much. For now, I keep all my eye shadows stored in one large duo. However, you can pop out 1 side and carry x15 shadows and x6 blushes for travel. You’d have plenty of options and it’d be easy to have your favorites in 1 place. The sides are seperated with a clear plastic insert that flips side-to-side (shown in the above picture up).

MAC now offers a place on their web site to design your own custom palette. I have not tried it, but if you’re at a loss, I’d consider checking it out.

MAC also dropped the price of their shadows at the same time. MAC said this was not a sign of discontinuing products, but rather and effort to create more buzz around their eye shadows. It worked on me. I love the palettes and right now only store MAC in my palettes, but would find them great for just about anything magnetic.

As a tip, the inserts are easy to pop in and out. For all of them, just grab a bottom corner tight, then grab the opposite top corner and slightly twist and they will pop right out. I have had no troubles at all with this method and find it easy.

    Andie,

I’ve spent the last hour going through your blog and gurllllll have you got some photography skills. Seriously, drooling. Le sigh. Can you give me lessons?!?! Also drooling over your collection – damn girl. I need a few more jobs to make some money and bring my collection up to par! Anyways, I think your pretty MAC palettes have just convinced me to finally depot all of my shadows. Gorge. Mostly, I just wanted to drop you a note that you are seriously skilled with your photographs 🙂

    Keep up the good work!

Awwww that is so very sweet! Trying to get better. Sometimes I get really frustrated doing a beauty blog because I like to be creative and I think “damnit, I have to show that true to color!” Lol mac palettes are so nice now. I actually use them & can travel so much easier with them – even if I need to move them to different palettes. I highly encourage it!!!! 🙂 thanks for stopping by; will check out your blog next!!

Hi! I’m so sorry about the late reply! I wasn’t getting notifications on my comments so I had no idea people were commenting!! ARG! Any way, I believe these were the old ones that were glued down. I put alcohol underneath the glue and gently worked them out is all. Once the glue loosened, it was pretty easy to pop them out!
